About us
History
Humanistiska Föreningen at Åbo Akademi was founded in 1927 to encourage and promote the interests of humanities students. When the association was young, in the 1930’s and onwards, it would host discussion evenings, social events, and general interest lectures. During the 1960’s the association was even politically active. In the 1970’s interest for the association was dying down, and operations ceased until 1999, when it was brought back. In this second coming, the name was changed to Humanistgillet, but was changed back after only three years – returning in 2002 to Humanistiska Föreningen.
During its active years the association has had its office at Kåren, in Humanisticum, and nowadays in Arken, where our “clubhouse” Faustkammaren, F, is also located. Faustkammaren was founded in 2004, and is an integral part of our operations.
Humanistiska Föreningen has celebrated its anniversary on 22 March, the publication day of the first edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s tragic play Faust. This play has given the name of our clubhouse, as well as the date for the Humanities Day.
Humanistiska Föreningen has always had the pleasure of a good relationship with the other associations at Åbo Akademi, as well as Åbo Kåravdelning at Novia, as well as Humanistiska föreningen at The University of Stockholm, HumF.
Today
Humanistiska Föreningen, HF for short, is one of the faculty associations at Åbo Akademi University, and functions as an umbrella association for all the smaller department associations. HF has different committees which work together to create a fun and rewarding social environment at our university, and which also allow for members to become active in the association. We have an office, Gretchen, in Arken, where we host coffee breaks to allow members to gather during breaks between lectures and seminars.
The association arranges a variety of events, everything from keeping our clubhouse open one night a week, to hosting sitzes, cillax evenings, and cultural excursions. On top of this, the association has a number of events aimed at freshers and the undergrads at the start of their studies.
